UFMG Summer School on Brazilian Studies
The Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG) will host the 2025 UFMG Summer School on Brazilian Studies from July 21 to August 1, 2025 in Minas Gerais, Brazil. More information can be found here.
Two full scholarships (each to cover the $1,000 program fee) will be offered. The scholarships include the flights to and from Brazil, lectures covering diverse topics on Brazil, Portuguese classes, accommodation, three daily meals (Monday to Friday), cultural activities, and transportation for field trips.. A selection committee will determine the two awardees.
Awardees will then complete the required admission application to the UFMG summer program and VCU registration. Please note there is a required $250 Education Abroad Administrative Fee.

- Please write a paragraph (no more than 500 words) explaining your demonstrated interest in Brazil and Portuguese studies. Examples of demonstrated interest may include, but are not limited to, study abroad, coursework (particularly courses about Brazil or Portuguese), travel, volunteer opportunities, and membership/involvement in student and other related organizations.
- Please share how time in Brazil will be beneficial to you - academically, personally, and in your future career.
- In no more than 500 words, please provide an explanation of your financial need as it relates to your plans to study abroad and provide any additional details about your ability to fund your study abroad. Use this as an opportunity to discuss why you need this scholarship in order to participate in the program.
- I understand that by applying for funding through VCU Education Abroad I am not guaranteed to receive support and that my completed application will be evaluated through a competitive process. I understand that, if selected, I will be notified and asked to confirm my interest in receiving the award. I agree to notify the Education Abroad office in writing if I no longer wish to be considered for a scholarship. Students who no longer wish to be considered for the scholarship should email abroad@vcu.edu. By digitally signing this document, I acknowledge that both my personal reputation and the reputation of the University can benefit from the manner in which I represent myself and VCU. I will do everything within my control to safeguard my good name and that of VCU throughout my experience abroad. Write a thank you letter to be shared with Ms. Buerlein (Randi Buerlein Scholarship recipients only).
