John J. Lacy Jr., D.D.S. and Carolyn E. Lacy Scholarship

Dr. John J. Lacy Jr. began his education at Virginia Military Institute, graduating in 1963 with a degree in biology. He then entered the MCV School of Dentistry and graduated with the Class of 1967. After earning his dental degree, he pursued specialty training in oral surgery at Norfolk General Hospital (now Sentara Norfolk General Hospital) followed by a one-year residency in anesthesia at Mount Sinai Hospital in N. Y. At the completion of his residency, he was called to active military duty and served 42 months at the U.S. Army Hospital in occupied Berlin. Upon discharge from the Army in 1973, he and his family moved to Waynesboro, Va. to establish his practice and make their home. Lacy and his wife, Carolyn, decided to establish a scholarship in appreciation for everything that dentistry has provided them. Dentistry afforded Lacy an entry into the ranks of a respected profession. He has never forgotten Dean Harry Lyons’ remarks during his first week of dental school about what distinguishes a professional from other people. They profess not only a higher education and great skill, but they also profess a dedication to use these skills for the betterment of their fellow man without regard to personal gain.
