Jay Weinberg

Jay Weinberg served on the VCU Board of Visitors, including as rector, from 1989 to 2001. During his tenure, it became clear that the university had a deep need for scholarship funds for outstanding students. Then-VCU President Eugene P. Trani, Ph.D., appointed Weinberg to a committee focused on raising money for honors scholarships.

In 1997, Jay and his wife, Sondra, established the Jay and Sondra Weinberg Undergraduate Honors Scholarship to attract academically meritorious students to VCU.

Over the years, Weinberg has contributed nearly $1 million to the fund. “I’ve always felt that if a student has the ability and the desire to succeed, the least we can do is help them along that path,” he said, adding that he believes those who do receive such help ultimately return the favor when they become successful.

“We had a strong feeling that we wanted to help qualified students pursue their goals and find success,” Weinberg says. “We are grateful for the opportunity to enhance the quality of life for VCU students who have the ability and the desire to improve the world.”

Impact

The fund provides merit-based scholarship support for juniors and seniors who continue to make progress toward graduating from VCU with honors.
