Domenic Sica, M.D.
Domenic Sica, M.D. (M.D.’75, H.S.’78) served as chairman of VCU Health’s Division of Clinical Pharmacology and Hypertension and a professor of medicine and pharmacology at VCU from 1981 to 2022, when he retired.
Sica has always been a staunch supporter of the School of Medicine and VCU Athletics, and he has provided financial assistance to a number of VCU students and Richmond public school students for years. He established the Ram Slam scholarship program in 1998 to recognize high school students in the Richmond Public Schools system, both for community service and academic excellence. He managed the scholarship privately and personally chose recipients. Sica also purchased about 2,000 VCU basketball tickets for local youths so they could attend college games.
In 2009, Sica received the MCV Physicians Distinguished Clinician Award for his dedication to medicine in his medical practice, teaching and philanthropy.
In 2015, Sica established his first endowed fund at the university to continue his support. The Sica Family Scholarship provides financial assistance to single mothers enrolled at VCU.
“Children of single parents are up against the wall as it is,” Sica said. “I am hoping this scholarship will be one way of alleviating some of the worry these students face in how best they can afford to go to school and still tend to the needs of their children.”
Impact
The scholarship will be awarded to an incoming, full-time student on the Monroe Park Campus. The scholarship will be awarded to a single mother, based on merit and financial need and can be renewed for an additional three years providing the student remains in good academic standing.
